Why lameness is always noticed too late

On most farms lameness is spotted like this: a cow limps visibly on her way to the parlour, somebody notices, and she goes for hoof care. Everything that happened before that moment is the farm’s most expensive silent loss.
The problem is timing, not visibility
Lameness is a process, not an event. The deterioration in gait usually begins weeks earlier: stride shortens, the back arches while walking, the animal starts shifting weight off one foot. None of this reads as “limping”.
The human eye cannot catch these intermediate stages — not through carelessness, but through circumstance. A farm has hundreds of animals, each observed for a few minutes a day, and usually while standing still. Yet lameness is only visible while the animal walks.
What being late costs
By the time lameness is obvious, the job is no longer just hoof care:
- The cow visits the feed fence less often and milk yield drops.
- She shows less oestrus behaviour, so insemination is delayed.
- As pain and inflammation progress, treatment takes longer and costs more.
- With repeat cases she is culled — the most expensive outcome of all.
All of this accumulates up to the day the problem is noticed.
What a camera changes
A camera-based system evaluates the animal by the same measure on every pass. What matters is not a single day’s score but the trend against that animal’s own history. When a score moves on a 1–5 locomotion scale from 1.0 to 1.4 there is nothing to see yet — but the system sees it and adds the cow to the watchlist.
Early intervention is both cheaper and more likely to succeed than treating an advanced case.
You cannot manage what you do not measure
Manual lameness scoring works, but it has two problems: it varies between observers and it cannot be applied to the whole herd regularly. Automated scoring removes both — everyone looks at the same measure, and no animal is skipped.
